Gotta Have This Book
This was one of the best books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down. The stories were so descriptive it felt like you actually witnessed it. I have always been fascinated with aliens, ghosts, the paranormal and the supernatural. If you are like me then this is definately the book for you!

A Perfect Title
I'm a skeptic about many things, but some things just can't be explained or ignored. This book grabbed me and made me wonder about some events in my own life that were both profound and beyond explanation. I hope they write a follow-up! Skip Knowles

Succeeding Sane: Making Room for Joy in a Crazy World
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (February, 1998)
Authors: Bonnie St. John Deane and Jan Miller
Average review score:

Great book!
Bonnie is the most amazing person ever! Harvard, Oxford, the Olympics, Wall Street, and the White House despite coming from a quadruple- disadvantaged background? Wow! This book and her story are so inspirational. This is the first self-help book that ever inspired me to Do something. Normally I just feel mentally enriched by a self-help book but don't physically apply the knowledge.

Highly recommended
What makes this book so special are the real life stories the author shares. Her advice is honest and sincere because she has sorted through many of these issues herself and has generously shared her insights. I've found this an immensely useful book in understanding how to satisfy my drive to succeed without sacrificing other aspects of my life. Deane's life is remarkable and inspirational but she writes as if she is a friend helping you along your path.

Sudden Engagement (Harlequin Intrigue, No 619)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (June, 2001)
Author: Julie Miller
Average review score:

Ms. Miller does it again!
Sudden Engagement is another terrific book from Julie Miller. Not only does this story have a great mystery, but the chemistry between Ginny and Brett is terrific. As always, Ms. Miller delivers a well written story that is full of tingling sexual tension and well-crafted mystery and suspense. Well done!

Sudden Engagement
Julie Miller improves greatly in her second Intrigue, "Sudden Engagement," an excellent romantic mystery. Detective Ginny Rafferty is driven by the unsolved murder of her sister more than a decade ago. Now a body has been found that could be connected to her sister's death. Ginny needs answers, and the only way she can get them is to cooperate with Brett Taylor, who grew up in the neighborhood. Can she handle being his fake fiancee for the length of this case, or will she forget that it's a ruse?

I really didn't care for Miller's first Intrigue, "One Good Man," a story I found too predictable and familiar. "Sudden Engagement" is better in every way, featuring strong characters, a well paced plot, and an excellent mystery. I remember the days ten years ago or so when I could count on a good mystery in every Intrigue I picked up. That's rarer now, with many writers telling simple on-the-run stories or tales where the killer is too easily deduced. So I was delighted to find in "Sudden Engagement" a well thought-out mystery, the kind with a number of suspects and clues and doesn't feel like the author came up with it in five minutes. Miller drops clues with ease. I figured it out before the characters did, but this is still one puzzle romantic mystery lovers will enjoy trying to solve. Old secrets and a good sense of danger enhance the tale. Add a stirring romance between two warm, courageous characters, and this is everything I like to see in an Intrigue.

I genuinely liked the heroine, a perfect blend of strength and vulnerability. It took a while for me to warm up to Brett. His attempts to protect Ginny from seeing anything he deems too difficult for a lady are often annoying, especially considering her profession, such as when he tries to keep her from viewing a dead body in Chapter One.

Brett: "You can't go in there." Me: "She's a cop. You're an idiot. Get out of her way."

At least his heart's in the right place, and he's nothing like the jerk who was the hero of "One Good Man." Brave and bold, he's the right match for Ginny. The two of them have excellent chemistry. Miller also does a good job introducing other members of Brett's family in a way that feels unobtrusive. It's obvious they're being set up for their own stories, but it doesn't feel like they're being thrown in for that reason only. She actually finds reasons for them to appear.

The only reservation I have about the story is the sudden engagement itself. Like most books based on a hook, the one used in "Sudden Engagement" is gratuitous. There is absolutely no reason for Brett and Ginny to pretend to be engaged. They could pretend to be dating. He could go with her on her interviews to vouch for her and get people to open up. That works the first time they try it. Brett even suggests they pretend to be dating at first. It's Ginny that comes up with the engagement idea, probably because fake fiancees are a plot hook. It's never clear why she takes it this far, and that nagging element did bother me whenever it came up. (One more thing: whoever wrote the back cover copy should be fired. "Beckoning broad shoulders?" Yeccccch.)

A rating ultimately comes down to how much I enjoyed the book, and I enjoyed this one too much to give it anything less than five stars. "Sudden Engagement" is a very well-written, original tale of romantic suspense that shouldn't be missed. One of the year's best.

The Table of Inwardness
Published in Paperback by Intervarsity Press (July, 1984)
Author: Calvin Miller

The Table of Inwardness
What a beautiful book. I hope my thoughts will do it justice. So many times in this life we focus on the outside of Christianity, sharing the gospel, feeding the hungry, comforting the grieving. And while all of these things are important, we can be doing them for Christ as well as the pat on the back that comes along with it. This book helps one to focus on what you do when you're alone, when no one is there to give you a pat on the back. How are you spending your time then? This is the time for you to intimately love and worship Christ. This is the time to develop an intimate relationship with Him. An intimate relationship is never truly developed in public, but in the private quiet moments when sometimes words don't even need to be spoken. This book teaches you how to just sit at the feet of The Lord and take in his wisdom and love him intimately. Praise God for this beautiful work of art. Thankyou Mr. Miller.

A Table Worth the Time
This is simply the finest book I have ever read! Miller reminds us that in our relationship with the Lord we do not need more speed, we need more staying power; we do not need more busyness, we need more passion. Thank you, Calvin!

Ten Houses: Miller Hull Partnership (Ten Houses)
Published in Paperback by Rockport Publishers (August, 1999)
Authors: Oscar Riera Ojeda, Aaron Betsky, and Oscar Riera Ojeda
Average review score:

True Northwest Architecture
This book represents an extrodianry environmental focus for design. The houses created by the Miller/Hull Partnership display architecture originality combined with a keen knowledge of the northwest. Each house is created in harmony with it's surrounding environment--a beautiful representation of both art and archecture.

Please note the customer review entitled, "Architecture Reference Book," does not reflect the correct designer. The architects represented in this book are David Miller, Bob Hull, Norm Strong, and other very talented designers from the Miller/Hull Partnership.

Architecture Reference Book
The book reviews ten houses designed by Christian De Groote which are built in Chile round about 1988 to 1991. All the houses are contemporary and there are good photos of the houses. There is not much explination or description, however this is nor really expected of an Architecture book, since Architecture is more of a view and see experience. I thought that Christian in his designs had many great ideas. Perhaps he is not the most famous designer but I liked his designs very much and hope to incorporate some of the design ideas in the house I am building.

Test Development: Guidelines, Practical Suggestions and Examples
Published in Paperback by Patrick W. Miller and Associates (15 June, 2001)
Authors: Patrick W. Miller and Harley E. Erickson
Average review score:

The title tells it like it is......
I have been in elementary education for over 4 years and find this book to be indispensable in creating, choosing and evaluating assessment tools for my classroom. This book is expertly written in an easy-to-read format and the authors present the information with hands-on activities and examples. It goes through the basic types of test questions and helps the reader analyze the effectiveness of those items. It made me take a good, hard look at the assessments I use - I recommend this book to parents, test preparers, teachers, and administrators. Definitely a book that won't sit on the shelf!

Excellent Book for Teachers
"Test Development" is an great book for teachers who want to develop tests to accurately measure their student's achievement. Even as a teacher with over 30 years of experience, I picked up a number of good tips. The authors have done a terrific job presenting information in easy-to-understand language complimented by dozens of illustrations and examples.

Each chapter ends with review questions and exercises to reinforce learning. I found the section at the back of the book especially helpful. The authors provided many different examples of test items from several curriculum areas.

I would recommend this book for pre-service teachers, those new to the field and veterans who have made teaching their career, who would like to learn the ways to preparing the best possible exam for their students. It's a perfect addition to any teacher's resource bookshelf.

The Theater Essays of Arthur Miller
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (September, 1978)
Authors: Arthur Miller and Robert A. Martin
Average review score:

Classic essays on the nature of drama
These collected essays, first published in such periodicals as The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune, or Atlantic Monthly, trace the origins of modern drama in Greek tragedy and comedy. At least four of them should be required reading in any introductory course in British and American literature: The Salesman Has A Birthday; Tragedy And The Common Man; The Nature Of Tragedy; and The Family In Modern Drama. The last of these contains a memorable phrase that furnished the title of the selection of the late U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl's essays, At Home In The World. One brief quotation from Tragedy And The Common Man that seems especially relevant to the present era will suffice: "The Greeks could probe the very heavenly origin of their ways and return to confirm the rightness of laws."

Wonderful compilation of Miller's thoughts
This book is an incredible trip through out Miller's ideas. The essays on the book are very well selected and disposed in a good way for the readers to understand what Arthur Miller is all about. There's no better way to know somebody other than this persons' own words. And this is what's so special about this book. We get to know Arthur Miller through his own special words. The first essay, "Tragedy and the Common Man" is already classical for its contents. Most of the books about Arthur Miller talk about it, but this very book happens to be the only way for us to actually read the whole text. Summing up: if you're willing to go to the bootom of this very important writer, this is the book you must choose.
